Dave was born and raised in Saskatoon but moved to Kelowna in 1991. Dave graduated from KLO Secondary School with honours. He then attended Okanagan University College for his first two years of study before transferring to the University of British Columbia where he completed his Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) and his law degree. Dave was elected President of his law class for 2002-2003. Dave articled with a prominent business law firm in Vancouver before moving back to Kelowna to practice.

Outside of the office, Dave volunteers extensively with such organizations as the Kelowna Bar Association Society (current President); Crossroads Treatment Centre Society (past Vice Chairman and present Secretary); Junior Achievement (program volunteer); Kelowna Jaycees (present Treasurer and 2009 Gentlemen's Dinner Chair); Kelowna/Mission Liberal Riding Association (Director); and the Kelowna Apple Triathlon (Awards Co-coordinator and participant). Dave also enjoys athletics, including soccer, hockey and triathlon as well as spending time with his wife Tanya, their family and their friends.

Richard balances a thriving practice with busy outside interests that include being the President of the Kelowna Apple Triathlon Society as well as being a participant. His business clients are varied and include proprietorships, partnerships, companies, investors, developers, and financial institutions. His real estate clients range from lending and mortgage work to conveyancing, leasing and development transactions. He understands the issues and concerns encountered by clients and has the practical knowledge to ease and deal with these situations.

During his formative years Richard developed a passion for the beauty, the climate and the lifestyle of the Okanagan and when he graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1978 he was off to Kelowna. He practiced with Pushor Mitchell until starting Montgomery Miles with Dave. He has written a number of real estate articles and is a regular presenter on estate planning topics. Away from the office, in those few spare moments that Richard isn't organizing or training for a triathlon, he might be found with his wife Oneke boating on Lake Okanagan, skiing at Big White or simply enjoying a glass of wine.
